ABOUT

Today cinema is facing what is perhaps the greatest crisis in its history. The spread of COVID-19 has dealt a massive blow to the places where films are made, distributed, and shown, and changes in the media environment and people’s lifestyles are accelerating like never before. Cinema has been placed in a position that was unimaginable until a few years ago. It is not only the spread of an infectious disease. Disasters on a global scale and the inadequacies of political systems are coming to the fore, and all of these things are having an effect on cinema.

In this situation, the status of cinema is being challenged. How will cinema exist? Is a new form of cinema already being created? While grappling with these difficult circumstances, the Image Forum Festival 2021 looks for signs of possibilities for the future of cinema through screenings, symposia, and other events.

In the special program “Film in Shelter,” put together in collaboration with screening collectives and curators from several countries in Asia, we highlight cinema under threat for various reasons such as natural disasters and political strife, and through a transnational dialogue search for ways to keep film alive and connect it to new expression.
