SP6:ANIME ASEAN: Beginning film festivals under a military dictatorship

Myanmar’s contemporary film scene and nascent personal animation
8works68min+talk

With the establishment of the NLD government in 2016, Myanmar saw the end of more than a half-century of military dictatorship. The Wathann Film Festival, held in the Yangon, was created in 2011 under the military dictatorship as a festival screening only independent works that had not been subjected to government censorship. Thaid Dhi, a co-director of this festival, will hold a talk and screening on its role and the rise of the Myanmar independent film scene that has continued since the night before the liberation. MIZUE Mirai, who spent time in Myanmar as an animation instructor in collaboration with the Wathann Film Festival, will also attend this event as a guest.

curated by Thaid Dhi (Wathann Film Festival, Co-director)
