Times are drastically changing across the globe, and so is the state of filmmaking. Natural disasters, technological innovations, societal and political changes—the effects cascading from these changes have made filmmaking more and more constrained for a large number of filmmakers, resulting in a relocation to another country, or to go underground. However, with the continual effort of producing and screening films in various ways, filmmakers have been paving ways for new encounters and connections for their films and audiences. Those who have been chased into the fringes disperse like clouds, then connect with each other through underground currents, all the while empowering and innovating cinema as a whole. We will introduce the latest state of such works at Image Forum Festival 2023, which we have given the alternative title, “Gathering Clouds.”
