Under the curfew restrictions of post-coup martial law, Myanmar’s Generation Z is trying to create a trend of underground, personal films. This program introduces new films emerging from Myanmar.
In 2022, an online filmmaking workshop was held between Myanmar and Japan. The question was how to continue making films in Myanmar, where outings are restricted and difficult for people to get together. The resulting films are “underground” in its truest sense. The film The Altar by Moe Myat May Zarchi was screened at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival in Germany, and is beginning to attract international attention.
