Goma, a city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has been the scene of conflict for many years. This exhibition introduces an intense experimental video work that overcomes the cliché and renews the image of Africa.
The film, Mulika, won an award at the Locarno Film Festival for its depiction of Congolese society with an Afro-futurist imagination—featuring an “alien” who descends into the wasteland after the eruption of Mount Nyiragongo. APA is a montage of intense clashes between environmental destruction, military threats, and children growing up in the midst of it all. In Mwana Pwo, a sleepwalker-like camera portrays a chaotic street corner in Goma, where the existence of NGOs and international cooperation organizations give insight into “neocolonialism.” Three powerful films.
