A Lover’s Discourse

PANG Wen / digital / 14 min / 2024

A couple plays a boardgame at an adjacent table in a café. Awkward attempts at contact, gazes that do not cross. Based on the Roland BARTHES work with the same title that compiles fragments of various texts, this is a work of drawn animation that uses poetic images to evoke the inner world of the “I” who loves as a free, unconstrained subject.

PANG Wen
Born in Sichuan, China, PANG Wen is an animation artist and painter based in Japan.

Shanghai Zoo

LI Yuan / digital / 14 min / 2023

A moving image work is projected onto a white cube wall in the darkness of an art gallery. When a gallery staff member spots a woman stealthily approaching the work, she calls out to her. A difficult-to-grasp conversation between the two of them. “The main character looks a bit like me.” As interlayered images come and go, this poetic work expresses the uncertainty of existence.

LI Yuan
Yuan LI is a multimedia artist and filmmaker whose work focuses on the fusion of art and cinema.
Her innovative approach seeks to push the boundaries of the two realms and discover new possibilities for narrative expression.

“Unbuilding” documentary film

MOCHIDA Atsuko + AOYAMA Shinya / digital / 50 min / 2024 《Audience Award in Tokyo》

The “dismantling” of a building that is not usually given a spotlight. On site, quickly returning the property to vacant land is standard practice. Here the “art” of MOCHIDA Atsuko intervenes with a different temporal axis/value. A documentary that carefully captures the reaction of demolition workers and people around the site to this act through interviews and footage of the scene to depict a “nexus of art and society.”

MOCHIDA Atsuko
“Unbuilding” was selected for the Mitsubishi Corporation Art Gate Program 2021-2022 Activation.
In 2022, Mochida was chosen as one of the “30 artists under age 35 whom the art world is now paying attention to” (ART News JAPAN). Received the KATAOKA Mami Prize (TERRADA ART AWARD 2021) for “Steps”. She won the SAITO Seiichi Prize (CAF Award 2018), the IMAMURA Yusaku Prize (Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi 2018) for “The Revolving House of T.”

AOYAMA Shinya
