The 140th anniversary of birth, 80 years after passing, the first-ever surrealism film “The Seashell and the Clergyman” by one of the earliest female filmmakers Germaine DULAC enchants with live music by Shuta HASUNUMA & U-zhaan. Once in a lifetime movie experience!
Directed by female director Germaine DULAC from a script by Surrealist poet Antonin ARTAUD. The film fantastically depicts the anguish of a monk who falls in love with a woman, using camera work and montage that still surprises us today. This legendary film is said to be the “first surrealist film” released earlier than BUÑUEL’s “The Dog of Andalusia” (1929), and caused a stir among surrealists when it was first released.
