Experimental cinema is not a popular art form among artists and filmmakers in Malaysia, where the visual art is still dominated by paintings and sculptures, and the filmmaking scene is dominated by narrative films. Since the establishment of KLEX festival in 2010 by a group of artists, it has been making effort to create a platform showing a different kind of cinematic works, in hope to create an awareness of cinematic works with non-com- mercial intentions and with an experimental spirit and approach to the Malaysian audience.
This programme is an overview of experimental videos produced in Malaysia in the past 10 years. They might not fulfil the“experimental film conventions”in the Western sense, but nonetheless these artists are trying to make personal cinematic works that are not straightforward narrative nor documentary in their own ways. The selected works range from various styles of personal home-video, aesthetic moving images and sound, frame-by-frame animated video, video performance and experimental documentary. The works explore subjects such as daily happenings, personal relationship, history of family and origins, contemplation on modern lifestyle, and graphic-sonic aesthetics. (KOK Siew-Wai)
