As the programmer of Thai Short Film and Video Festival, I have great privilege to see the early works of the young Thai filmmakers. When I was asked by Koyo Yamashita to curate the Thai experimental films for Image Forum Fesitval, I was so tempted to share my privilege to Japanese audiences. I selected awarded shorts by new face filmmakers from the past recent years. This program will show the different contemporary issues and styles of Thai experimental films as well as introduce the upcoming filmmakers.
The recent political and social turmoil in Thailand were reflected into The Age of Anxiety, Endless, Nameless and Dreamscape. The Age of Anxiety combined footage of Thai folktale melodrama with illusory atmosphere to present the country’s insecurity. Endless, Nameless brought us back to analogue film with 16 mm black and white film without sound. The film was deepened because of the recent coup de tat. Dreamscape used a creative documentary style to portray the dream of ordinary people during the chaos. Superbarbara orchestrates #MeToo campaign with funny animation plus feminism. FFF is a the personal and self-reflexive film concerning the personal relationship and society.
Last but not least, I hope that the program will satisfy audiences and contribute some ideas to approach the festival’s theme “What is Experimental Film?”(Sanchai CHOTIROSSERANEE)
