Films and Words 3: Mueda, Memory and Massacre

1 work, 80 min.

A recently digitized historical film by Ruy GUERRA, a standard-bearer in the Cinema Novo movement, in which memories of a colonial-era massacre are transformed into a celebration of revolution.

On June 16th, 1960, the Portuguese army turned its guns on protesting civilians, and over 600 people were massacred in the town of Mueda. Ruy GUERRA’s film reenacted this event that marked the beginning of Mozambique’s anti-colonial struggle in the place where it happened after this nation had achieved independence. This is the first Japanese screening of this masterpiece of political cinema, considered Mozambique’s first feature-length film and a work that played an important role in the process of decolonization.
