Animation with an intense, violent touch unfolds based on the filmmaker’s experiences of things like parental relationships and sexual identity. There is simultaneously a manifestation of subjective suffering and the pain of talking about oneself. The unique chyron features a “women’s script” used in Hunan Province, China. The dedication to XIANGLIN Sao, a female character who appears in a novel by LU Xun, is also notable.

Nizi
A refugee in transit, a member of host families, a person on the neurodiversity spectrum.
A dazzling cinematic poem from Macao, the “Las Vegas of the East” where citizens’ lives are deeply affected by the casino tourism industry. Against the urban landscape of contemporary Macao, the screen is filled with card tricks that deceive the eyes of the audience. A beautiful, ironic fairytale of a city of illusions, told through the eyes of a “joker” who is kicked out of a casino.

LAO Keng U
Keng U LAO is a filmmaker and artist. He graduated from Arts University Bournemouth with a BA degree in Film Directing. Through different materialities of the moving image, Lao explores the performativity of theatrical magic as an expanded metaphor for how perceptions and imaginaries of reality are manipulated and generated. Lao’s works reflect and refract conceptions of identity, memory, and futurity in contemporary Macao.
A distinctive work embodying the spirit of animation. A large crow sits on a utility pole. When a boy looks up at it, he hears a voice from somewhere. It is the crow. The crow releases purely white droppings in front of the boy, and says of the shape of their splatter, “It is a star.” An allegory containing cultural commentary unfolds. Will the boy come to see the droppings he had considered “dirty” as a “star”?

Mutsuto Nosaka
Born in 2003 in Saitama Prefecture. Produces music videos and other works primarily focusing on animation.
The protagonist is a woman auditioning for the role of someone possessed by a spirit. But to whom do the words she is speaking belong? The story is given multiple layers, time gets mixed up, and tricks are hidden. Eventually, like a person losing consciousness, the “truth” told by the film becomes ambiguous. The latest work by up-and-coming South Korean filmmaker YU Chae, whose narrative experiments deepen with each film.

YU Chae
Chae Yu is based in Seoul(KR)/Chicago(US) and is interested in experiencing different expressive positions in sound and image. Her films trace the rhythmic continuity of bodily gestures, exploring how they connect with transient places where relationships between individuals dissolve. Her films have been presented internationally in various film festivals and venues.
