She Crossed

Daisy Ziyan ZHANG / digital / 18 min / 2024 《Award for Excellence》

Studying abroad in America during the COVID-19 lockdown, the filmmaker encounters an immigrant woman from Columbia working as a cleaner in the student dormitory. Their gaze is drawn to plants extruding their leaves and roots from artificial buildings. A daughter departed. They too departed. Life goes on. A small but warm interaction between two immigrants unheeded by locals is captured with emotional richness through the texture of film.

Daisy Ziyan ZHANG
Daisy Ziyan ZHANG is an observer. Fluid, floating, and rooting adventitiously. Between the tenderness and unease of being, dancing; her body of work constructs a reverie for new imaginaries of the everyday, rippling with longing, searching for kinship. She was trained and practiced as an architect with a master of architecture from MIT. She is now an independent filmmaker.

Cocoon

Yiwei CHEN / digital / 5 min / 2024

Filled with signs that evoke some distant memory. In a dark room, a TV shines. What is projected is a single moth. After laying several eggs, the moth flies out of the picture tube. When a small girl touches the eggs… A drawn animation that portrays a young girl’s night of unease with a pale touch.

Yiwei CHEN
Yiwei CHEN is a 2d animation artist from China. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2023. Emotions, memories and self-reflection are a great source of inspiration for her creativity.

Distant Voices

ITO Takashi / digital / 53 min / 2024

A field of withered sunflowers and a derelict public housing complex. A breathtaking sense of bleakness pervades the entire work. Two women who seem like each other’s alter egos. They wander with cameras, one filming strange objects and turning the camera on herself, the other filming a black dress hung in different places. A work filled with the “magic of movies” in which the everyday world and an unreal world momentarily intersect.

ITO Takashi
While studying at Kyushu Institute of Design, he attracted worldwide attention with the experimental film “SPACY” (1981), created as a project for MATSUMOTO Toshio’s seminar. He explores concepts such as the surreal quality of the visual world and the ambiguous relationship between reality and fiction. His representative works include “ZONE” (1996), “The Last Angel” (2014), “Three Women” (2016/4-screen multi projection), and “Toward Zero” (2021).
