Image Forum Festival 2024 explores the significance of freshly reexamining the present in which we are living through “movies.” Our special program is entitled “Tangling Lines of Site: Narratives and Documentaries,” and in this program we consider the approaches with which “documentary films” confront this media crisis of our current circumstances, in which media itself is constantly creating political division and chaos and has become a threatening entity fueling people’s anxiety, through screenings and discussion events.
In the Experimental Panorama section, we focus on the present state of analog film media, which is increasingly only being utilized in historical contexts, through a selection of works by contemporary analog filmmakers.
In the Filmmakers in Focus section in which we historically reexamine individual filmmakers, we will feature conceptual experimental films by AWAZU Kiyoshi, one of Japan’s leading postwar graphic designers. We also will feature on works by the Japanese artist unit IKIF, which celebrates forty-five years since its formation this year, and on works by Pat O’NEILL, one of leading experimental filmmakers from the West coast of the US, known as a pioneer in optical composing techniques.
This year we had 442 entries to the East Asian Experimental Competition section from Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, and sixteen diverse works unconstrained by genre have been selected for the nomination.
We hope you encounter new worlds, ways of thinking, and people through the Image Forum Festival 2024.
