A Magical Substance Flows Into Me
Music and Culture transcends the walls of language, history, politics and territory. Presenting two documentaries by Jumana MANNA that reject any superficial interpretation of Palestine/Israel as well as Arabs and the Jewish people.
Using recordings of the 1930s radio program “Oriental Music” featuring Jewish German ethnomusicologist Robert RACKMAN as a guide, Jumana MANNA presents “A Magical Substance Flows into Me” where, through a dialog with musicians, she depicts today’s diverse rich ethnic community music of Palestine in its urban and suburban areas which are home to Kurds, Jewish Moroccans and Somalians. As a double feature, “Blessed, Blessed Oblivion” will be shown, a film inspired by Kenneth ANGER’s “Scorpio Rising”, depicting the macho, thug culture of Palestine where the youth are obsessed with gyms, cars and haircuts.
