\u2013\u2013\u2013Where did you get the concept for this film?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last year, my daughter was born. When I put her in a baby carriage and went for a walk, I began to wonder if my daughter, at age zero, was seeing the landscape as I did. I thought maybe she sees all landscape as equally the same. It was then that I decided to just line up all the landscape (land). At the first conceptional stage, I thought of creating this with animation only. It was in the middle of this process that I began reading \u201cUlysses\u201d by James Joyce. I then became interested in intertextuality, about mixing things like adaptations of famous Japanese poems and Kabuki. What crossed my mind then was that when you read a book or see a motion picture, sometimes you get connected to landscape. For example, a landscape written in this book may seem similar to the landscape of that motion picture. Both are fragmental. but in my mind, there are times when they have a connection. That\u2019s how I got the idea of lining up fragments by citing pictures and writing.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013What were your thoughts when lining up sequences?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I would line up key pictures and text for the scene, instantly decide which had compatibility and mix them together. I thought that it would be good to leave something meaningless or nonsensical in the film. So, I really didn\u2019t think that much about what order I should present things. I did things like create motifs of clouds for sequences and maneuver content inside pictures. Yet the pairing of the pictures and text within a sequence was an act of chance.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013Although there wasn\u2019t much motion in the animation, I did feel the physical embodiment that you, Mr. ALIMO, were drawing the picture.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I really never had an interest in moving things. With so called animation, if you give motion to it, it just ends up as animation (chuckle).<\/strong> I do have this wish to see a fight between pictures and animation. \u201cAre things really in that much motion in the real world as they say?\u201d You know, lately I\u2019m starting to ask myself that (chuckle).<\/strong> When you look outside your window, trees don\u2019t sway unless the wind blows. In a work of animation, it\u2019s the power as well as the charm of expression that allows for motion. I still think animation that doesn\u2019t fit that form should also exist. In the end, I regard animation as a system that documents myself drawing a picture. The desire to express through visual imagery the act of humans drawing pictures\u2026 Even here, the act of drawing and creating motion are two different things.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
