\u2013\u2013\u2013You\u2019ve had a very long career. Can you talk about how it led to \u201cThe Stream\u201d series?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been involved in filmmaking since the 1980s. At the start I made installations and moving image works focused on self-portraits. Later, I moved from Yokohama to Uji after taking up a teaching position at Seian University of Arts and Design. There I encountered a large belt of rice paddies called the \u201cOguraike Polder,\u201d and this inspired me to change my style. The title \u201cThe Stream\u201d refers to a flow or current, and the rice paddy scenery transforms with the passing of time. I began making this work with this transformation as its motif.
\nI shifted away from a self-portrait style, but the common theme [in my works] is \u201chuman expression.\u201d In my early period my interst was focused on myself as an individual, but with \u201cThe Stream\u201d series it moved to the environment and the undertakings of human beings, including myself. It is change and flow that arises when elements of nature such as plants and animals interact with artificial environments such as rice paddies.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013Please tell us about the production of this work, The Stream XII-\u2161.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Waterweed is one of the nature motifs that has often appeared in \u201cThe Stream\u201d series. Waterweeds grow thickly in the waterways constructed in rice paddies. They follow the paths of these waterways. The hairlike weeds move in the current of water brought in by pumps as though dancing. I focused on this scene of nature encountering a manufactured current in an artificial environment rather than untouched wilderness and turned it into this work.
\nThis time I added the new motif of fields of reeds. The film is broadly divided into two parts, the first of which is summer scenes of reed fields shot from the sky using drones. The second part is winter scenes of reeds being burned by human beings.
\nIn summer fields of reeds the size of a baseball diamond grow to a uniform length. Reed fields are harvested as materials used for things like thatched roofs. In winter people burn the reed fields. By doing this they make sure that in spring only reeds will grow, and no other plants that might impede their growth will take root. Human beings interact with nature to artificially construct this growing environment.
\nBurning the reeds emits carbon dioxide, but the process of reeds sprouting and growing in the spring collects carbon dioxide. As a result, carbon dioxide is not increased. The process is carbon neutral. Moreover, the roofs of traditional Japanese buildings using reeds trap carbon for thirty years. Managing the reeds contributes to reducing greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide.
\nThe rippling movement of the reeds in the wind shot by drones is depicted like a dance troop on the stage of reed fields arranged by human beings. In this \u201cThe Stream\u201d series I express the sense of vitality and \u201cflow\u201d that is created through the interaction of human beings and nature on the model of ballet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
