\u2013\u2013\u2013You\u2019ve been active as a sound artist. Do you have an original piece of work that mixes your sound with video?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve never made a video before. You could say I made this film as an end result of my interest in auditory culture theory. In short, \u201cNachtmusik\u201d is a film posing questions at the overlapping point when and where the essence of sound and natural sound, the two themes of the motion picture, come together. The visual imagery of the video is made by a technology known as spectrogram. It\u2019s an all-too-common technology which even exists in smartphone applications. In short, you run wave forms through time-axis and frequency-axis analysis and output something like a musical score on a two-dimensional surface. It\u2019s a technology that visualizes sound. I created a program displaying such spectrogram, and continued by trial and error to see what image would appear if I entered a certain sound.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013There\u2019s a section where you cited a picture. Now, can you guess what kind of sound might pop up just by seeing a picture?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When you get this complex, you hardly can guess something like that. It depends on your priorities of what you feel is more interesting. The audio or the visual. I do remember it was quite difficult balancing the two.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013I found the feeling of coming and going from projection to abstraction of sound and visual content, quite interesting.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was after 19th Century Romanticism that we felt the presence of the concept of music being an abstract matter. Music prior to that included quite a lot of description of a certain type and this concept was accepted as such. The difference of abstraction versus description to me, is between the \u201cessence of sound\u201d and \u201cnatural sound\u201d at the point they are blended together. This, by the way, is the crucial theme of the film. Practically every sound in the film is computer synthesized. So, I was able to make it sound abstract as well as natural. Yet what I wanted to express and depict is this palpitation like phenomenon in between the two.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013I found the gap between the abstract sound like when the drinking package logo is shown, to be quite interesting.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That was just some piece of garbage I unexpectedly picked up. I did that so as to contrast reality from the idealized outlook on nature and the environment. I consciously selected text characters and symbols to make the sound. Why? Because I thought this is something that should never be expressed in a spectrogram.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
