\u2013\u2013\u2013 What was the idea that led you to make \u201cmy mother\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have a lot of unease about the everyday. I imagine things like, for example, what would happen if I flew over there? I have this slightly uncanny sense of delusions mixing with reality regarding the world I see. I feel like this is characteristic of the world as I usually see it. I wanted to express this, so I started making animation, but I also regularly take live action footage of things that catch my attention, and I thought by combining [these two media] I might better be able to mix myself [into the work]. Animation has a weaker story quality to begin with, and I thought I could explore the border between narrative and non-narrative. I made it with things like experimental re-editing in mind.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013 Do you draw animation on a daily basis?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes. For example, when I have a dream I will draw it in the morning, or if I see someone who seems interesting when I am walking I will immediately draw them. I consider inspiration in daily life very important, and for better or for worse my works are deeply connected to the everyday. As a result, all of my works include slightly \u201cself-documentary\u201d elements. I think this is one of the characteristics of my works.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013How did actual production of the film unfold?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t make detailed storyboards, but rather pull pieces that particularly catch my attention out of a large quantity of materials and then put them together. The first scene is footage of a camera falling, and for this I tied a video camera worth about \u00a52,000 to a string and dropped it. I accidently let go of the string and it broke… [laughs]. This is not a work full of positive feelings, so while it wasn\u2019t a destructive impulse, I shot and used this kind of new imagery as elements that can express these sorts of feelings inside me. The other footage is material I have shot over the past year or two, and I selected and put it together by feel. Emotional expression is difficult to put into words, but I think I incorporated the method of layering live action footage to give a sense of reality.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013The sound in this work is also unique, so I would like to ask your thoughts on it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sound was also done largely by feel. In my previous work, \u201cwhirl\u201d, I wanted to express the confusion in my head by overlaying two or three tracks of myself talking. In \u201cmy mother\u201d there are cases in which I kept the sound in the source material as is, and cases in which I added new sound. I think the amount of information in daily life is huge, and deciding what to pick up and what to discard is very difficult.
