\u2013\u2013\u2013 Had you made films before studying abroad at Nagoya City University?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, I started from zero. I didn\u2019t know anything about filming, including the terminology. I came to Japan in 2017, but I spent the first year and a half at a Japanese language school before entering graduate school. I joined Professor Kurihara Yasuyuki\u2019s \u201cKurihara Lab.\u201d I was interested in Japanese experimental films, so I talked it over with the professor and decided to make experimental film my theme. He has also done a lot of work in this field, so\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013 \u201cBelong\u201dwas your graduation project, but please tell us a bit about how this work came to be made.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During summer holidays 2022, I put together a five-member team, and we went to Aomori prefecture, birthplace of Terayama Sh\u016bji, to shoot the film. This was inspired by my having seen works by Terayama when I was attending university in China. I particularly liked \u201cPastoral: To Die in the Country\u201d. I was really excited when I first saw it. I was thrilled that such a wonderful film could exist. After coming to study in Japan, I heard various stories about Terayama from Professor Kurihara. I started to think that the theme of my graduation project should be a fusion of the Mongolian culture of my birthplace and Japanese cinematic culture as represented by Terayama. So during summer holidays I went to the place where \u201cPastoral: To Die in the Country\u201d was shot, Mount Osore, to shoot my film. There were five people on the team that went to Aomori, but there was also a team of about fifteen others who took part in shooting at the university\u2019s studio. I wanted to shoot the Mongolian scenes in China, but at the time the COVID-19 pandemic made this impossible, so we built a Mongolian set and shot them in the studio.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013The last scene was particularly striking. How did you come up with the story?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There were many things I wanted to convey in the last scene. Sadness, and various other emotions\u2026But I felt that talking about it was very difficult. The foreign culture symbolized by \u201cfather,\u201d the Mongolian culture of my birthplace symbolized by \u201cmother,\u201d the changes in the protagonist influenced by them, and so on \u2013 there are complicated emotions when I think about my own identity, where I came from and what I am. I portrayed tears as an internal symbol of this.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013 The film includes the playing of a horsehead fiddle.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I had long wanted to use a horsehead fiddle, the musical instrument most representative of Mongolian culture, in my own film, and I learned that the operator of a Mongolian restaurant in Nagoya could play it. I saw footage of it on the Internet. I phoned him up, introduced myself, made a PowerPoint presentation on my project, and went to see him. After I had explained the project, I asked, \u201cHow much is your performance fee?\u201d He replied, \u201cYou don\u2019t have to pay me anything,\u201d adding, \u201cI don\u2019t play for money.
