\u2013\u2013\u2013What made you produce \u201cShape of the Elephant\u201d and your works before that?<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was my graduation film I produced at Tokyo Polytechnic University. I didn\u2019t produce anything prior to this film. I did complete a short animation piece as a group production project, but as far as an individual, \u201cShape of the Elephant\u201d is my very first film. In this film, I wanted to depicts things that were personal to me. As a child, I grew up in a family where both my parents were, how would you say it\u2026 oppressive or not open about sex. Being brought up under such an environment, there were at times problems concerning my personal relationships with friends. I made this film out of a desire to depict these experiences I had.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013Can you explain what made you choose \u201cShape of the Elephant\u201d for the title?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAn elephant in the room\u201d is an English idiom which means \u201ceveryone knows about it but acts as if they don\u2019t.\u201d Taking this idiom and applying the elephant\u2019s trunk as a boy\u2019s penis, I chose the title using \u201celephant\u201d as a motif with two meanings.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013Your film is broken down into four chapters. How did you put these together?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I put together four episodes of events in my childhood and maturing years which remain very strong in my memory. The image of the elephant in the film is a depiction of how sex impacted me. The first chapter is entitled \u201cMeshed\u201d and depicts an invisible elephant adults try to hide. In the second chapter, the elephant is a symbol of sex as something we shouldn\u2019t see, so I called it \u201cMedusa.\u201d The third is \u201cPinocchio.\u201d Having discovered that my family deceived me on sex, I began to think the elephant was a liar and so I had this image of Pinocchio. The last episode is \u201cElephant\u201d but the elephant here appears as nothing more than an elephant. This expresses my maturity. I was trying to depict a disillusionment with sex.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013How did you proceed with the production of your animation?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I first drew my storyboard. Yet my final storyboard was quite different from what I started with. I had this one image I definitely wanted to draw. So, my storyboard started to change centered on this image. Overall, I prioritized this image I wanted to depict. The other sections were made, in a way, to support this image.<\/p>\n

\u2013\u2013\u2013Do you have works you\u2019ve been influenced by?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before coming to Japan, I was in China, studying in an academic department that taught software development. I quit the school, however, because I wanted to do animation and so I started my studies on drawing. At that time, however, what I knew of Japanese animation was limited to \u201cONE PIECE\u201d and the works by Studio Ghibli. During the second year at the university, I participated in the Feinaki Beijing Animation Week where I saw \u201cMilk Cup Cow\u201d (2014), Yantong Zhu\u2019s Master\u2019s degree graduation film at Tokyo University of the Arts. Learning at the time that animation could depict private emotions and personal stories made me want to make this type of animation. From my third year at the university, I began producing animation with a desire to depict my emotions after enrolling in Tokyo Polytechnic University\u2019s Independent Seminar.
