—Your work seems to be brush-drawn. It\u2019s quite an impressive painting.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s actually a print. Almost all of mainstream commercial animation today is computer produced. In my case, my style is non-narrative and so I also emphasize the process of creating a drawing. I engage in my projects with a conscious effort to always coordinate the concept with my drawing technique. As a result, I think my animation has aspects which are closer to Fine Art than commercial animation.<\/p>\n

—So, it\u2019s a printed piece of artwork. Can you tell us about the touches you put on your drawings and your production style?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I consider myself partially inspired by the works of our nationally renowned painter, Jung-seob Lee (1916-1956).<\/strong> In his works, women are only depicted as wives or mothers. This makes me want to engage in my projects conscious of the issue that we have an absence of artwork depicting women who have no family obligations.<\/p>\n

Now, he had artwork he drew on silver paper, the kind you find inside packs of cigarettes. Here, I use a method I call, \u201ckitchen lithograph.\u201d It\u2019s difficult creating lithographs without being in an art studio. Yet if you use this method, you can get about the same finish upon completion by using kitchen aluminum foil and substituting chemicals with cola drink. I felt I could convey my message pretty effectively because I was able to bring a kitchen, defined as a woman\u2019s setting under the patriarchic system, within my art content.<\/p>\n

—It\u2019s time-consuming work, isn\u2019t it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I print the drawing on aluminum foil with a laser printer. With this process, the color is still pale. So, I add layers of color with the kitchen lithograph. Doing so leaves considerable amounts of trace material. The soaked water in blank spaces evaporates, leaving stain-like spots, which appear on the surface. I think this allowed me to depict pretty well, the analog-like sensation I was after. At my first production stay residency, I was kicked out because they thought I might destroy their printer (chuckle).<\/p>\n

—Were you warming up to the theme of Korean conception dreams (taemong)?<\/strong><\/p>\n

This also concerns my family history. My grandmother on my mother\u2019s side met a divorce because she could not give birth to a boy. My mother was the youngest child. The conception dream of her was that of a tiger. The dream stated that if a boy was born, he would definitely grow up to be a military general. However ultimately, my mother was born. In the end, my mother achieved much success and she half-jokingly said that was because of the conception dream of the tiger. The conception dream for me was that of a horse, which is also interpreted as a pattern of success for a male. You could say my mother\u2019s life took advantage of such patriarchic preconceptions. Even as a child, I wanted to live a strong life much like my mother. In my work, I depicted this fighting character who is half human and half horse. I did this because I wanted to depict the image of a tough woman living in a patriarchic society.<\/p>\n
