—I gather, you were a photographer at first. What made you produce this film?<\/strong><\/p>\n

All of this happened on account of my discovering a newspaper article that published my grandfather\u2019s story. I then decided to document with photographs, my grandfather\u2019s narrative experience. So, I began reading articles and seeing documentaries on the Jeju Uprising (Jeju April 3 Incident).<\/strong> However, I got the impression that the only information available consisted of the same memories presented in the same format. I felt that testimony on this incident to a certain extent were made authoritatively. I wanted to make a video that disputed this.<\/p>\n

—Your film started with a daily basis of conversation, and then you began using lighting and stage settings. Now, were these activities based on a film structure you had from the very beginning?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You\u2019re half right about that. This is what happened. At the time we started producing the film, we didn\u2019t know my grandfather had joined the forces subjugating the island. When we learned about this, there were big changes to be made. I felt we had to make the film reflect this fact. The flow of the film appears to condemn my grandfather, but this also has something to do with the title of the motion picture. From the title of the film \u201cThe shooters,\u201d you may think it\u2019s about those who shot people with guns during this incident. Actually, it\u2019s about myself, the filmmaker. You can say it\u2019s also about the documentary producers who pointed their cameras at the concerned parties as well as the news reporters who covered the story. This is because I wanted the people who hid behind the cameras to extract graphic testimony from others, to feel uncomfortable. The feeling of condemnation gets stronger and stronger as the film proceeds into its second-half. This is due to the depiction of uncomfortableness expressed in the motion picture.<\/p>\n

—Why do you think your grandfather went as far as he did?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think to a certain extent, my grandfather and I shared an awareness of the problem. I think he already felt this uneasiness at these documentaries of the past and understood that his grandson wanted to depict the story in a different way.<\/p>\n

—Are you going to continue producing these types of documentary-like films?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I went about with this film thinking who would feel uncomfortable, and who would feel uneasy. I think I\u2019ll maintain this stance in my future films. I mean, I sense a form of fatigue against these historical accounts being repeated and recreated. In these cases, concerned parties like my grandfather are only given the position of being the target and not the subject. Furthermore, the perspective becomes more and more fixed as time goes by. With regard to this, I\u2019ve got the motivation to go and stir things up. To utterly destroy this notion.
