—I had an image that your earlier works were more abstract. I feel that lately, you\u2019ve gone through some changes. Does this have something to do with the poems you write?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The poems I write, in particular, are the type that take root in my real self and the way I live. Therefore, time-axis becomes important. It\u2019s important for me when writing my poetry to be living in a present progressive form. In the end, though, I find the subject matter to many of my poems are about my children. Within me, this is the most pressing issue I have.<\/p>\n

—You seem to express yourself with words that are more straightforward now.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A part of me writes poetry and another part of me makes videos. I tend to constantly look for the point where my words come together with my visual imagery. In my last film, I chose to recite but this time I really didn\u2019t know what to do until the very last minute. This time the film is in Japanese but it has to be translated for overseas exhibitions. There\u2019s going to be discrepancies in the translation. That\u2019s a given thing which you can\u2019t do anything about. I\u2019m truly happy, though, that through the exhibitions of this film, people are accepting the motion picture straightforwardly in the Japanese language.<\/p>\n

—You have more text characters than before, but regardless of visuals and these text characters, I think the film expresses your feelings pretty well.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m conscious of depicting visual imagery with words even when I write poetry. You know, my poetry is also very visual. When I read poetry and understand the words, the scene comes to my mind. I think my type of poetry is the kind that can create visual imagery.<\/p>\n

—Your film starts with text like subtitles in a silent film, but it ends with handwritten text on manuscript paper.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lately, I find I\u2019m gradually limiting who I want to relay my feelings to-my children. I feel I don\u2019t need to convey my messages to everyone anymore. I\u2019m hand writing so that if my children read my poetry after I die, they\u2019d realize how their mother felt about things, and this would make me happy.<\/p>\n

—Your film was exhibited at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen. What was the reaction to the film?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the end of the film, there\u2019s a scene where sunflowers wither away. I was asked quite often why I let the flowers wither away. What I wanted to pose was the fundamental question of \u201cwhat is human life about?\u201d I \u2018ve noticed that because I\u2019m Japanese, I tend to end up with a belief of all things being in flux through an endless circle of birth, death and rebirth. Or, some other Buddhist thinking, which tells us life and death and everything else are linked in a cycle and that this just keeps going around and around. Personal desires and feelings are indeed the starting point of expression. Yet perhaps the feeling of wanting to pursue a fundamental question is deepening within myself. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
