Only vague answers come when she questions \u201cI.\u201d Am \u201cI\u201d awake or dreaming? As the COVID-19 pandemic spreads throughout the world, silence falls over the Liuzhangli cemetery in Southeast Taipei where the victims of terrorism lie. A man digging in the cemetery, a headless bird, and a three-legged dog. Are these things that appear in the scenery behind the monologue a dream, reality, or a hallucination? Monochrome images that seem to spread silence beyond the screen tell the story of lives hidden in the history of prosperity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/2023\/images\/C2_AdiongLU.jpg\" class=\"port\" alt=\"\" \/><strong>Adiong LU<\/strong><br \/>\nAdiong LU was born in Chiayi, Taiwan in 1984. He fixes his gaze on people and places absent from official histories. A former director of Jittoku Films LTD, he is based in Taipei. His films include &#8220;The Boiling Water LAMA&#8221;, &#8220;Once Upon a Time when Robin Hood Grew Old&#8221;, &#8220;Crazy Calligraphy\u201d, \u201cI\u00e2m-ti\u00e2\u207f Khu-ti\u00fa\u207f (Yancheng District Chief), and &#8220;THE Boy Q&#8221;.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"film-list\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/2023\/images\/C3_the-nighthawk-is-not-a-hawk.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div><span>China \/ Japan<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Nighthawk Is Not a Hawk<\/h2>\n<h3>WANG Junjie \/ digital \/ 9min. \/ 2022<\/h3>\n<p>A work of drawn animation based on Miyazawa Kenji\u2019s \u201cThe Nighthawk Star.\u201d The tree branches that metamorphosize into a \u201cnighthawk\u201d at the start leave a strong impression. The nighthawk is ugly, despised by other birds, and pushed to change its name from \u201chawk.\u201d While carefully visualizing episodes from the original work, the filmmaker adds dialogue not found in the text and creates an original, sorrowful \u201cnighthawk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/2023\/images\/C3_JunjieWANG.jpg\" class=\"port\" alt=\"\" \/><strong>WANG Junjie<\/strong><br \/>\nBorn in Zhejiang, China in 1996. Completed studies as a research student in the video program at Musashino Art University. Received master&#8217;s degree from the Department of Animation at Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Film and New Media in 2023. The man sitting across from me stares at my thighs as \u201cI\u201d gradually open my legs. Then a \u201csunflower\u201d sprouts from my crotch. The filmmaker has written a poem with the same title, and its words weave together the work as a whole. The scene in which a sunflower blooms in time with the melody of Lange\u2019s \u201cBlumenlied.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/2023\/images\/C4_YuriMURAOKA.jpg\" class=\"port\" alt=\"\" \/><strong>MURAOKA Yuri<\/strong><br \/>\nBorn in 1981. Graduated from Image Forum Institute of Moving Image. She has consistently made self-portrait films. Her &#8220;Transparent, I am.&#8221; (2020) won the Grand Prix at The International Short Film Festival Oberhausen. Her poetry collection &#8220;Sleeping Flowers&#8221; (2021) was nominated for Chuya Nakahara prize and H-shi prize Mother of two children.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"film-list\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/2023\/images\/C5_the-shooters.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div><span>Korea<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The shooters<\/h2>\n<h3>YANG Jihoon \/ digital \/ 31min. \/ 2022<\/h3>\n<p>The \u201cJeju April 3 incident (Jeju uprising)\u201d occurred in South Korea in 1948. A massacre was committed by the state. When the filmmaker learns his grandfather was a victim, he visits him with his camera in hand. Drinking alcohol and eating snacks, gradually his grandfather begins to talk about what happened to him. Sixteen years old at the time, he left his father\u2019s dead body and hid himself in a cave. Then he begins to talk about joining the suppressing forces himself\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/2023\/images\/C5_JihoonYANG.jpg\" class=\"port\" alt=\"\" \/><strong>YANG Jihoon<\/strong><br \/>\nYang Jihoon works on photographs and videos. He tries to find things hidden in the process of image production and consumption.
