This program features Russian filmmakers who have left the country in search of freedom of expression since the outbreak of war in Ukraine in February, 2022. How is Russia portrayed from their perspective?
A year and a half has passed since the invasion of Ukraine. How do Russian filmmakers, who have left the country in opposition to the war, portray Russia today? No nation without culture captures the streets of Chechnya, filled with portraits of Putin and Kadyrov; Still Free is a home movie-like film that captures the raw emotions of a young man about to serve in the military; and “DVA” depicts people living under the threat of catastrophe in a dystopian science fiction style, reflecting the absurdity of the political situation in Russia.
