Railment

HAYASHI Shunsaku

digital / color / 10min. / 2017 / Japan

music: Jack STEVENS

In a continuous scenery, his physical movement stays in the same position. The speed of the continuity and his movement have accelerated and gradually cause a distortion.(H.S.)

A short animated work featuring fluid transformations with a delicate touch. A man rides a train by himself. A city that has suffered a disaster becomes visible through the floor. His hands sink through the floor, extend into the world below, and pick up and drop a train running through it… The work depicts an isolated entity that cannot help distorting the landscape through which it moves. The title is perhaps a word created by the artist as a portmanteau of “rail” and “ailment.”(M.K.)
