9-year-old Maya escaped the Sri Lanka Civil War to the UK. Influenced by hip-hop, street art, and the Immigrant society of London, she started to make her own very individual type of music, eventually becoming a world-famous pop icon, M.I.A. Her politically straight talking bad-girl character is always a target of criticism, but her rendering techniques were shaped by the civil war, the existence of her father, who was a rebel leader, and her experience as an immigrant growing up in England. A documentary based on the 22 years of footage filmed by herself and her friends. Winner of the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
